Sword - Ken is the soul - Shin of the Samurai. Sword is the soul of Budo. Sword is a symbol of Sincerity - Shinken and Respect- Rei. Before the face of the Sword if we are not sincere in our intentions it could cause our Death. In Budo practice to be sincere is very important as well as respect, it is the beginning and the end of Budo way. Without sincerity and respect the practice is no more Budo, just sport, just sweat. We show respect to our Teachers, Students,Tatami, Dojo, to the whole World we are surrounded by. We respect each life moment. Bow - Rei is a physical manifestation of Respect and Sincerity. But bow must be fulfilled with our sincere feelings, without them it's just a bow, simple motion, as an empty box.
